Grant County (pop. 52,000) lies in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, bordering Iowa and Illinois. The population is 94% white, median incomes are lower than the state average, and the median resident is slightly younger than the state average as well. Politically, the county has been relatively competitive for both parties; although, there are some signs of growing Republican performance in recent cycles.

The population of Grant County is spread across 52 cities, towns, or villages which lie wholly or partly within the county. The largest is the City of Platteville (pop. 11,500), which is also home to UW-Platteville. Communities including the cities of Platteville and Boscobel and the Village of Montfort are usually Democratic-leaning. Many other municipalities have consistently seen narrowly divided outcomes over the past decade while many of the most rural towns are strongly Republican.
